by her MacNeil grandparents. It was here that she wrote Anne of

Tourism Summerside is planning several activities
in the city this summer to celebrate Anne 2008. Centering around
The Shipyard on Summerside’s waterfront, Tourism Summerside will construct
a Train Station where Anne and Marilla will greet visitors and
locals alike. Ice cream cones, sundaes, cool treats and soft drinks
will be for sale to the many people who frequent the boardwalk.
The Anne series of books, and the Special Edition songs of Anne
CD will also be available.
Visitors can have their picture taken
with Anne and Marilla beside the Railway Crossing sign, under the
Summerside Train Station sign, or beside displays inside the building.
Enter your picture into our ‘Anne Look-a-like Contest’.
The prize will be a basket of Anne gifts, including a limited edition
porcelain doll, and ‘Guest of Honor Tickets’ to the
Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert Reunion, August 17.
The Train Station
Carriage Tours – July 7 to September 14
The tour will include Matthew
and a new custom made horse-drawn carriage that will leave from
The Shipyard.
Saturday and Sunday (weather permitting) at 1
pm. They will conduct half hour tours of the heritage areas of
the city until 5 pm. A special edition newspaper will give passengers
a description of the buildings and homes along the route, in particular
the ones associated with Lucy Maud Montgomery or places in her
books.

photographs, manuscripts magazine ads, cover art and posters reveals
the genesis of the novel Anne of Green Gables and its rise to international

Imagining Anne Exhibition

Montgomery
was an ardent lover of beauty and also a careful and creative observer
of everyday life. To celebrate the anniversary of the publication
of Anne of Green Gables, the exhibit will showcase shapes, colours,
and images that inspired Montgomery; it will feature original photographs,
manuscripts, and scrapbooks where she recreated the worlds she

Anne 2008 Textile Showcase - "Kindred Spaces"

What
can tie generations together more than a beloved quilt? As a way
of fostering the love of Anne of Green Gables and Prince Edward
Island in Japan, an Anne Textile Showcase was organized. This event
will celebrate a "Kindred Spaces" theme in partnership
with Patchwork Quilt Tsushin Magazine from Japan and provide a "hands-on" way
of joining the two countries that will last for years to come.
Quilting is very popular in Japan and a strong
motivator for travel, and upcoming exposure in the popular, Patchwork
Quilt Tsushin Magazine will further increase awareness of Prince
Edward Island and 100th Anniversary of the publication of the novel
Anne of Green Gables in Japan. The projected was developed in conjunction
with the Yokohama International Quilt Exhibition, which saw 70,000
visitors in 2007, towards the exchange of quilts (30 coming from
Japan) to celebrate the 100th anniversary and promote Prince Edward
Island and Anne of Green Gables. Tourism PEI is inviting quilts
and other two dimensional textile works to participate in the fall
show and accepting work in the themes of:
- Kindred Spaces - maximum
perimeter 120 inches; work must be an interpretation based on
a line, chapter, or paragraph of a Lucy Maud Montgomery writing;
or,
- 100 Years of Anne - maximum perimeter 120 inches; work must
be a reflection of Anne of Green Gables.

The quilt showcase will be held on the Island
from September 12 to October 12 and a tour group from Patchwork
Quilt Tsushin in Japan will travel to PEI to see the exhibition
here September 13 - 17, 2008. The winners' quilts from this show
will be exhibited in Yokohama in November 2008 and Japan's winners'
quilts will be exhibited in PEI in 2009.
